- The following is a description of the NCSA/BYU/UofU Telnet program...
-
- The University of Utah Computer Center has modified Telnet so is can
- support MacGopher. It is hoped an anticipated that NCSA and BYU
- will support these modification at some future release of Telnet.
-
- There is no cost for this application.
-
- Note: NCSA is not responsible for maintenance of this version, so
- please don't bother them with problem reports. Instead, send
- problems to Rhett "Jonzy" Jones at: "jonzy@cc.utah..edu".
-
- The following explains further about this version of Telnet.
-
- This ftp client is implemented in the non-Mac "command and scroll" style
- (of older and lower life forms). We're making this version available
- now for others who need the outgoing ftp capability and aren't fussy
- about interface elegance.
-
- Known problems:
-
- 1. Only one outgoing ftp session can be active at one time, but it does
- work okay with simultaneous Telnet sessions and incoming ftp activity.
-
- 2. There is no "ftp>" prompt as you find on most other systems. So when
- an ftp session is established you login by typing "user username",
- then type your password on the next line. We'll fix the user interface
- after we decide what to do and when we have time to work on it.
-
- This is not a commitment to provide maintenance support, and since we're
- busy we might not be able to respond.
-
- VERSION 2.3.1 improvements...
-
- 1. NCSA's FTP client code added.
-
- 2. Holding down the shift key while pressing "cmd F" during a "Telnet"
- session sends the FTP command without the "-n", which is necessary
- for some non-unix systems like VAX/VMS.
-
- VERSION 2.3.2 improvements...
-
- 1. Problem with the VT100 emulation of scrolling
- regions which causes the Mac to crash in some situations.
-
- 2. FTP client "MGET" and "MPUT" functions are working properly, and
- ftp server "NLST" related functions (i.e., MPUT & MGET) work much better.
-
- VERSION 2.3.3 problems & improvements...
-
- 1. Problem reported by Ted Nieland of Control Data Corporation (25 Jun 1990):
- Session one: A telnet session to a host
- Session two: A FTP client session to same host as session one.
- Start a MGET from session two.
- Switch to session one. After the current file gets finished in session
- two, session one turns into a ftp session
- and the further requests from the MGET go to it and subsequently fail.
-
- Status: Fixed.
-
- 2. Requested improvement from Russell Owen (31 Aug 1990):
- Implement a way of opening an ftp session purely from the keyboard;
- either by bringing up the Open Session... dialog box with "ftp"
- already checked (e.g. by cmd-option-O), or by allowing some key
- command to toggle the "ftp" check box.
-
- Status: Done: Command F now toggles the "FTP Session" check box.
-
- 3. Problem reported by "PWF@vx.acs.umn.edu":
- During the option negotiation between NCSA Telnet and the Multinet server
- an '!' exclamation mark keeps on appearing before the Username: prompt.
- Has anyone run into this before? I'm using NCSA Telnet 2.3g for the
- Macintosh. I haven't run into it yet logging into any other system
- except Vaxen using Multinet.
-
- Status: Fixed, and reported to NCSA.
-
- 4. FTP client "mget" function not working on Mac II FX.
-
- Status: Fixed.
-
- VERSION 2.3.4 improvements...
-
- 1. Problem & solution reported by David Palmer (16 Dec 1990):
- Tektronix graphics "x coordinates can be up to 3 pixels off, which
- means that if you have a line in two segments, the ends don't match
- up properly.
-
- Status: Fixed.
-
- 2. Dynamic IP assignment broken in version 2.3.3.
-
- Status: Fixed.
-
- VERSION 2.4.8 improvements...
-
- 1. Changes made at BYU to version 2.3.x have been included in 2.4.8.
-
- 2. TEK graphics are fixed to work as they did on version 2.3.x.
-
- VERSION 2.4.9 improvements...
-
- 1. The "Set Usable Lines..." function under the "Session" menu
- was broken in version 2.4.8.
-
- Status: Fixed.
-
- 2. FTP server was not returning the "257" code during a PWD
- operation causing it to fail, also broken in version 2.4.8.
-
- Status: Fixed.
-
- 3. Two new keywords have been added to the "config.tel" file:
-
- "linemode=no" disables linemode globally.
- "eightbit=no" masks off 8th bit of incoming visible characters.
-
- 4. The default is now FTP server "off", to avoid potential security
- problems.
-
- VERSION 2.4.10 improvements...
-
- 1. Now that the default is FTP server "off", "ftp=yes" in the
- "config.tel" file turns it on.
-
- 2. The mode "eightbit=no" (in config.tel) has been improved.
-
- VERSION 2.4.11 improvements...
-
- 1. We fixed a bug that was causing Telnet to crash occasionally
- when a session was closed.
-
- 2. FTP to certain IBM hosts such as brownvm.brown.edu has been
- fixed, there was a problem with sending the password.
-
- 3. Printing/copying graphics from a Tek graphics window has been
- fixed, it no longer requires text to be selected in the session
- window before the "Print Selection..." menu item becomes available.
-
- 4. By popular demand: a blinking cursor and 1 of 3 different cursor
- styles can now be selected in the preferences dialog.
-
- 5. When the non-MacTCP version is used on localtalk it will attempt
- to "register" with or without KIP.
-
- VERSION 2.4.12 improvements...
-
- 1. VT220 emulation has been implemented, and it will identify itself
- as VT200-series unless one or both of the following conditions
- are found: 1) No extended keyboard, or 2) "eightbit=no" specified
- in the "config.tel" file. In VT220 mode both the keyboard and
- display emulate a VT220.
-
- 2. FTP client initiated file transfers and other functions that fail
- with a result code of "5XX" are now aborted properly. This solves
- the problem of files being created that can't be trashed or
- written over because they are still open.
-
- 3. Keyboard mapping of option keys has been fixed to honor the active
- system script. And, Telnet no longer does a "setscript" which
- fouls up other applications. The application "KCHR" resource is
- used for mapping keys only if it is the only "KCHR" resource that
- can be found (i.e. System 6).
-
- 4. The non-MacTCP version will now attempt to connect to hosts with
- or without KIP.
-
- 5. Blinking cursors have been improved, so the cursor image is not
- visible when it should be invisible.
-
- VERSION 2.4.14 improvements...
-
- 1. Text was being blocked out (reverse video) when it should not
- be, and was most noticable using "elm" with UNIX System V -
- this has been fixed.
-
- 2. In VT220 mode the arrow keys were not switching from keypad
- to application mode - this has been fixed.
-
- 3. The "LIST" function in the Telnet ftp server would fail with
- certain hosts, causing the FTP connection to hang - this has
- been fixed (and it affected functions such as ls, dir, mget).
-
- 4. All keyboard keys are now mapped via the KCHR resource, instead
- of only "option" key sequences as in previous versions.
-
- 5. The "TEK form feed clears screen" menu item is now highlighted
- and unhighlighted properly.
-
- VERSION 2.4.15 improvements...
-
- 1. Both serial and SLIP connections are now possible (and can be
- simultaneous with ether/atalk sessions), as follows:
-
- - Serial connections: Simply check the "Serial/SLIP" box in the
- session dialogue. Use the "Serial Port Settings..." function
- under the "Network" menu to change the characteristics of the
- serial port (baud rate, stop bits, ...).
-
- - SLIP connections: First, specify the SLIP IP # to be used by
- the Macintosh by using the "Serial Port Settings" item under
- the "Network" menu. After establishing a serial connection to
- a slip host, simply press "command L" (or select the "Switch
- to SLIP" item under the "Session" menu) and the "Open Session"
- dialogue will appear. Check the "Serial/SLIP" box to initiate
- a SLIP connection (all subsequent "Serial/SLIP" sessions will
- be SLIP sessions.
-
- SLIP Notes:
-
- - Name serive is not available when using SLIP, so connect
- to a host by using it's IP number.
-
- - Using a SLIP IP # that is the same as the IP # being used
- for ether/atalk connections is discouraged.
-
- The type of connection (serial or SLIP) that will be attempted
- by checking the "Serial/SLIP" box is indicated by a check mark
- on one of the two items at the bottom of the "Session" menu.
-
- Switching from SLIP to serial connections is allowed only after
- all SLIP sessions are closed.
-
- 2. The "config.tel" file can specify "hardware=serial" in cases
- where a Macintosh will be attempting "Serial/SLIP" connections
- only - this avoids error messages that result from trying to
- initialize ether/atalk network drivers.
-
- 3. Macbinary file transfers have been improved: header fields that
- are not used are now cleared or set to appropriate values.
-
- 4. The key equivalent for the "Close Connection" item under the
- "File" menu has been changed to "command W", instead of "command
- K", for compatibility with Macintosh user interface conventions.
-
- VERSION 2.4.16 improvements...
-
- 1. MacTCP and NCSA drivers have been merged into one application.
- Specify "hardware=MacTCP" in the "config.tel" file to use MacTCP.
- The NCSA driver is always used for SLIP connections, even when
- "hardware=MacTCP" is specified.
-
- 2. Negociate about Window Size (NAWS) has been implemented, and
- tells the host about window size when a connection is made and
- when "Set Usable Lines..." is selected from the "Session" menu.
- On VAX VMS systems you must remove all "set term/options"
- commands from system and user "login.com" files for VMS to
- accept the NAWS parameters (termtype and window size) at login
- time. For those who don't know what this means: You can now
- double click on a Telnet document to open a connection with a
- window size of more than 24 lines, and host applications should
- recognize and use the whole window (on VMS systems EVE, TPU, and
- SMUG applications such as ANU NEWS work properly, but EDT does
- not).
-
- The "telnetd" on Ultrix does not NAWS - too bad. You can
- replace the Ultrix "telnetd" with the latest Berkeley "telnetd"
- and NAWS will work fine. The Berkeley "telnetd" is available by
- anonymous ftp from "ftp.uu.net" in the file called
- "networking/applic/telnet.91.03.25.tar.Z".
-
- 3. Pasteing text into a session on a serial connection now works
- okay.
-
- 4. A problem with "save sets" has been fixed when macros are in use.
-
- 5. Macros now work with FTP client sessions.
-
- 6. The "Switch to Serial" function under the "Session" is fixed.
-
- 7. The annoying dead spot on "Save Set" icons has been removed, so
- you can click anywhere on a Telnet "Save Set" icon.
-
- 8. The "reset" function has been fixed in the NCSA driver. When
- the FTP server is disabled, hosts that attempt to connect will
- now promptly notify the user "connection refused" instead of
- "hanging".
-
- VERSION 2.4.17 improvements...
-
- 1. MacBinary file transfers were broken in v2.4.15 & 2.4.16,
- a casualty of the ThinkC conversion - sorry.
-
- This has been fixed, and is now compatible with other
- MacBinary transfer programs such as Fetch.
-
- 2. The FTP client now allows "lcd" to a Mac folder whose name
- contains a space, like "desktop folder".
-
- VERSION 2.4.18 imprevements (AKA Think C 2.5 Beta)...
-
- 1. "Line Mode" is now working, which means login to NeXt systems
- works much better (no CR LF problems). In general, "CR" and
- "LF" problems have been fixed in the Think C version.
-
- 2. There is now a "Capture Session to File" function under the
- "Session" menu, which does what it says (text only, no graphics).
- It automatically creates a file named "Telnet Session #" at
- wherever the "Transfer Directory" has been located, where
- # is the number of the session. This name can be changed by using
- ResEdit on one of the STR# resources.
-
- 3. The "Remap option key to control" function has been put back
- in and only works when the System version is less than 7.0.
-
- 4. A new "preference" (option) has been added that offers a choice
- between the application KCHR and the system KCHR resource for
- default keyboard mapping.
-
- 5. ICONS from v2.5Beta have been implemented.
-
- 6. The text cursor is no longer obscured during rapid cursor
- motion.
-
- 7. The FTP client and server now honor the default transfer
- directory that is established by the "Set Transfer Directory..."
- item under the "File" menu.
-
- 8. Other minor fixes.
-
- VERSION 2.4.19 improvements...
-
- 1. The ftp password capability was broken in v.2.4.18 - fixed.
-
- 2. SLIP connections were causing 68000 based Macs to crash - fixed.
-
- VERSION 2.5B (May 1992) improvements...
-
- 1. Port numbers are now saved in telnet "save sets" (documents).
-
- 2. An "Alias" feature has been added to the "Network" menu, which
- permits the operator to create aliases for hosts.
-
- 3. "Print Selection..." now works to HP DeskWriters.
-
- 4. Other minor fixes.
-
- Known problems:
-
- 1. SLIP needs BOOTP capability.
- 2. The FTP client needs a prompt and a lot more work.
- 3. The "scroll back" function does not seem to be working properly
- when the window height is greater than 24 lines.
- 4. There are display problems with fonts other than 9 point monaco.
